FAQs for Active Communities

1. What is the Active Communities idea?

Active Communities is a programme run by Buckinghamshire Council to inspire everyone in the community to sit less, stand often and move more. It is a way for everyone to support and encourage each otherto move more.

2. What makes an active community?

It is a community where everyone (children, adults and older adults) is a little bit active as often as possible at home, work, school or leisure by sitting less, standing often and moving more.

3. Who is it for?

Active Communities is for everyone (children, adults and the elderly), gender types or ethnicity. It is particularly for those who do not like or play sport or are not interested in physical activity. It is for those who sit a lot, spend lengthy periods indoors and for those unable to stand.

4. Why is being inactive (such as sitting) unhealthy?

Even after just sitting for 20 minutes, our bodies begin to shut down. For those who are inactive for long periods, there is a greater risk of heart disease, type 2 diabetes and even some cancers.

5. How can we be less inactive?

Making small changes suchas sitting less, standing often and moving more regularly throughout the day can make a major difference to your health.

6. Why is sitting less, standing often and moving more good for me?

By regularly standing, you reduce the effects of sitting for too long. Regular standing and moving increases heart rate, blood flow, muscle strength, bone health and digestion. It is also good for your emotional wellbeing, too.

7. If I am unable to stand, how can I take part

Everyone can benefit from being a little more active. Even those who are unable to stand or walk can improve their wellbeing by moving their upper body, arms and head. If you have anyconcerns or questions, email peter@activemovement.co.uk

8. Is there any support for Active Communities?

Active Communities is all about supporting you. Many community organisations in the area have joined the programme to share information and to inspire you to be active. They have leaflets and other support material to tell you more about living in an Active Community. See the ‘Active Together’page for a full listing.

9. How can I get the most out of Active Communities?

Sitting less, standing often and moving more does not require any equipment, space or facilities. It does not need computer technology or training. Active Communities is designed to help and encourage you to move more and become a little bit more active. The more you move, the better.

10. How long does Active Communities last?

The first phase of the programme lasts from May 2021 to June 2022 when we will look at feedback and decide how to continue. However, the benefits of sitting less, standing often and moving more can last you a lifetime.
