Recognising abuse

Domestic violence is most frequently abuse my men against women in the context of an intimate relationship – but if you experience it in any other form from a partner or another family member you can be confident that support services will take your situation just as seriously.

A single incident of abuse counts as domestic violence, but there is usually an ongoing pattern of controlling behaviour and abuse that gets worse over time. It can begin at any time, though there are certain common trigger points such as a partner's pregnancy or a separation.

Any children in a household are also affected – not only is the abuse of an adult in the home very frightening, but there is a strong overlap between domestic violence and child abuse.
