Introduction

Unlike NHS health services, social care services are not always free. Instead, they are means-tested, which means that the Council will ask you to provide details of your financial situation, and then work out whether you are able to pay all, or part, of the cost of the services you receive. If you are not well off, you may receive your care free of charge.

The means test

The means test assesses your financial situation, which includes:

  • Your regular income – such as pensions, benefits or earnings, and
  • Your capital – such as cash savings and investments, land and property (including overseas property), and business assets.
